Three more arrested over Northern Bank raid

Three more people have been arrested by police in connection with last year's £26.5 million Northern Bank robbery in Belfast.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man in Dungannon, a 43-year-old man in Coalisland and a 30-year-old man in Belfast on Wednesday. This follows on from Tuesday's arrests of two men in their 20s in Kilcoo, Co Down. Police are also carrying out more searches in Kilcoo in connection with the robbery.

Last year's robbery of the Northern Bank headquarters on December 20th was the largest in UK history.

The IRA were blamed for the robbery by PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde and the British and Irish Governments.

However, both the IRA and Sinn Fein denied the accusations.

A subsequent report by the International Monitoring Commission (IMC) said the IRA was behind the robbery and that senior members of Sinn Fein had sanctioned the raid.

In it’s fourth report, published as a result of the heist, the IMC said that while Sinn Féin continually said it was opposed to criminality of any kind “it appeared at times to have its own definition of what constitutes a crime”.
