Police investigate fatal hit-and-run incident
A 19-year-old man has died following a hit-and-run incident in south Belfast in the early hours this morning.
The victim was crossing the junction of Tierney Gardens and Donegall Road shortly before 2am on Friday when he was struck by the vehicle. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
A few hours later a Rover 600 saloon car, which is being connected to the incident, was found burnt out at Cooke Street off the Ormeau Road.
Police said they want to speak to the driver of a second vehicle who "took evasive action to avoid the accident" to contact them.
Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey described the incident as "a terrible tragedy". "Too many lives are lost on our roads," he said. "It doesn't matter what community this man came from this is a terrible shock.
"I have already contacted local representatives and through them expressed my sympathies to the family of this young man.
"I would urge the person responsible to come forward."
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
