Dangers of working at heights targeted by councils
Environmental health officers from councils across Northern Ireland have begun taking part in a Province-wide campaign aimed at reducing falls from height in local workplaces.
Against a background of 67 fatal accidents at work and nearly 4,000 major injuries in a 12 month period, the current campaign is being supported by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI).
Valerie Brown, Environmental Health Manager with Belfast City Council, said: “Working at heights continues to be the single biggest cause of fatal accidents and one of the main causes of major injuries – and the main cause of all injuries from falls from height is people falling from ladders."
The Northern Ireland version of the new Work at Height Regulations came into operation in July. These regulations impose a new duty on employers to do all that is reasonably practical to prevent anyone falling whilst at work.
Businesses in the Belfast City Council area can obtain advice and information on the new Regulations by contacting the Health and Safety Unit on 028 9027 0428.
Businesses outside Belfast should contact the relevant local council.

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has announced the launch of Live Better, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing health inequalities in Northern Ireland. The program will initially focus on neighbourhoods in Belfast and L'Derry, with plans to expand to other communities if successful.

15% Rise In Littering Fines Being Issued
New figures have shown a 15% rise in the number of fines issued for littering. In the 12 months to April some 3,742 fixed penalty notices were issued by 26 local councils, according to a report by the BBC. However, the figures also show a disparity in the issuing of fines from council to council.

New figures show that 92% of 'Large Scale Planning Applications' are being dealt with within six months, beating the set target of 75%. Turnaround times for planning applications are improving, becoming "speedier and fairer", Environment minister Mark H Durkan said.

Appeal For Information After Bullet Found Lodged In Front Door
Police have issued an appeal for information following a shooting incident in west Belfast. According to police, a resident at an address on Lisvarna Heights reported hearing a "loud bang" outside their home at around 11pm on Sunday 01 August. The following morning the resident subsequently found a bullet lodged in their front door.
