Sports strategy takes further step forward

The development of a new Strategy for Sport in Northern Ireland has taken another step forward, the Government has said.

At the third meeting of the Strategy for Sport Northern Ireland Steering Group on Wednesday, the Sports Minister David Hanson and members of the Group reviewed the current state of sport in Northern Ireland and reviewed progress on the consultation to date and the results of the review of the existing Strategy.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Hanson said: "During the past weeks over 250 people, ranging from members of the public, local government, youth, community and business representatives, sports governing bodies, rural and education interests and health professionals, have made their views known.

"The challenges for the new Strategy will be to set out priorities for sport and benefits from the range of opportunities arising from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These challenges will include increased participation, talent development and the delivery of sporting success."

The establishment of a Steering Group to draw up a new Sports Strategy for Northern Ireland was announced in July.
