Smith leads NI drive for helping of Chinese boom
Enterprise Minister Angela Smith will lead a trade mission to China later this month to help local companies tap into the potential of the world’s largest economy.
Thirty-five local companies will visit the key Chinese business centres of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing during the trade mission.
NIO Minister Angela Smith announced her participation during a visit to Applied Silicate Technology (AST), a local company taking part in the trade mission.
She said: “China is the largest and fastest growing economy in the world, offering Northern Ireland huge opportunities for trade, investment and partnership. Instead of seeing the growth of the Chinese economy as a threat, local companies should access the potential on offer.
“This visit is an opportunity for local companies to explore the Chinese market place, to discuss trade and technology transfer and to build partnerships. I will also use this trip to consolidate and extend opportunities for academic research with further and higher education institutions in China and to develop new partnerships.”
The Minister will host a reception aimed at the Chinese tourism market whist in Shanghai: “Almost 29 million Chinese travelled overseas last year. By 2010 it is estimated that 50 million Chinese will travel overseas. Both the UK and Ireland have been recognised as approved destinations by the Chinese authorities, so it is crucial that Northern Ireland is marketed to this audience.”
The trade mission departs Northern Ireland at the end of November.
