Roads Service to invest nearly £1m in Newry area
The Roads Service is to invest nearly £1 million in local transport and safety schemes in the Newry and Mourne District Council area this year.
Divisional Roads Manager, John White, revealed the details, as he delivered the Roads Service's Autumn Report to Newry and Mourne District Council.
Mr White said: "The allocation for the Newry area reflects the additional funding for local transport and safety measures that has recently been secured in the 05/06 financial year. This means that Roads Service will be committing some £27.5 million across Northern Ireland towards these important local schemes."
Roads Service has already completed a number of schemes in the Newry area including: Local transport and safety schemes on the Drumalt Road, Silverbridge; Milltown Street, Burren; Chapel Road, Meigh; the junction of Killeen School Road and Cottage Road; Armagh Road at McCann's Roundabout; Sandy Street, Newry and Belfast Road Roundabout, Newry; and resurfacing schemes on the Tandragee Road, Newry; Armagh Road, Newry; Ballagh Road, Newcastle; Mourne Esplanade, Kilkeel; Dallan Road, Warrenpoint; Scrogg Road, Kilkeel; Roxborough Road, Cullyhanna; Saval Lane, Newry; Kingsmill Road, Whitecross; Rath Road, Warrenpoint; Tullyneill Road and Tunnel Road.
At the meeting Mr White discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2006/07.
He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes are planned at Greenpark Road, Rostrevor; Glenhill, Newry; Sandbank Road/Kilkeel Road, Hilltown; Dundalk Road/Cullyhanna Road, Newtownhamilton and Concession Road at Wards Corner."
Mr White also updated the meeting on progress on Major Works Schemes on the A1 road.
The A1 Loughbrickland to Beech Hill scheme is "progressing well" with the emphasis now being placed on the southern section in the Newry and Mourne Council area. Completion is anticipated in summer 2006.
The A1/N1 Cloughogue to the border (and on to Ballymascanlon, Dundalk) scheme has commenced on site and is due to be completed in 2007.
