HIV infections on the increase
A report into new HIV infections throughout the UK has revealed that there were 63 new cases in Northern Ireland over the past year.
The figure, which is an increase of 31 on the previous year, was part of a report launched to coincide with World Aids Day.
The Northern Ireland figure is part of an overall total which show that over 58,000 people are now living with HIV in the UK.
Commenting on the report, the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland, Dr Henrietta Campbell, said: "The Department continues to emphasise that prevention is the key to reducing the burden of HIV/STI and we will continue to work with our partners across the health community to promote the principles behind our Sexual Health Promotion Strategy and Action Plan. This includes reducing new diagnoses of HIV and STI by 25% by 2009."
Dr Neil Irvine from the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, Northern Ireland, (CDSCNI) said, "In 2004 we saw another increase in new HIV infections. Sixty-three diagnoses were made compared with 32 last year.
"There were also increases in syphilis and chlamydia infections. I am disappointed that the safe sex message particularly in relation to condom use appears not to be getting through, particularly to the most vulnerable groups."
Thursday's report is a collaboration between the Health Protection Agency, Health Protection Scotland, the National Public Health Service for Wales, CDSC Northern Ireland, DHSSPS Northern Ireland, Information Services Division of NHS National Services Scotland and the Institute of Child Health (London).

The number of people living with HIV in Northern Ireland has risen by 10%. A report by the Public Health Agency (PHA) found 522 are living with the infection in Northern Ireland, an increase of 10% since 2010. The number of newly-diagnosed people with HIV rose by 3%, from 80 in 2010 to 82 in 2011.
