Red Panda blaze 'difficult'
A blaze at the Red Panda restaurant on Great Victoria Street was desribed as one of the most difficult blazes that local fire crews have had to tackle.
The fire in the four-storey building broke out in the first floor bar area at around 7.30 on Sunday morning.
While the fire was contained to the first floor of the restaurant, it had threatened to spread to adjacent floors via panelling and internal ducts in the building.
Around 13 appliances and 60 fire crews attended the scene as fire crews had to strip away internal panels to ensure that the blaze was extinguished.
Great Victoria Street was cordoned off during the incident but has since reopened.
The fire is not thought to be suspicious, but the scene is still being examined by investigators.
Elsewhere a family escaped injury in a house fire at Silverbirch Crescent in the Waterside area of Londonderry.
A smoke alarm alerted the family to the blaze which seriously damaged the bungalow.

Fire crews deal with separate fires in Co Antrim
Police are appealing for information following two suspicious fires in Co Antrim in the early hours of Friday morning. The first fire was discovered at a factory unit in north Belfast at around 12 midnight. It is believed the blaze started when paper inside the unit was set alight. Some windows and two other units were damaged in the fire.

Motorist dies in Co Armagh school bus crash
A man has died following a collision between a car and a school bus in Co Armagh this morning. The victim, named as Jason Davidson Murray, 26, from Shandon Park in Newry, died when his car collided with the bus at around 8.30am on the Tandragee Road outside Newry.

Minister Condemns Attacks On Fire Crews
Attacks on fire crews place their lives in danger and put communities at risk, said Public Safety Minister Michael McGimpsey today. Condemning a further spate of attacks on firefighters in Dungannon and Londonderry over the weekend, the Minister said it was absolutely unacceptable for anyone to assault emergency workers.

Fire Service Rescue Man From Newtownards Fire
A man was rescued by fire crews from a fire at his County Down home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Fire crews wearing breathing equipment rescued the man from a ground floor flat at Bristol Park in Newtownards and he has since been taken to hospital where he is being treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.
