UU students unveil community mural
UU students and long-term residents of the Holyland area of south Belfast have unveiled a 16-foot mural promoting diversity in the area.
The initiative was set up by the University’s Community Relation’s team and brought together students and residents of the area to design and paint the mural.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Wallace Browne, unveiled the painting at a special ceremony at Cadogan Street.
He said: “This is an excellent initiative by the University of Ulster who have facilitated students and long term residents to come together to enhance the environment of the area in which they live. It is through these acts of civic leadership by all residents of the Holyland that we can build a vibrant and prosperous community.”
UU student and artist, Adrian Margey, was the artistic drive behind the mural and over 25 students and residents played their part in designing and painting it. He said: “It is fantastic to see students and long-term residents of the Holyland working together through art to make a positive impact on their community. The mural expresses the diversity of those living in the Holyland today and reflects on the history of the area”.
Anne Monaghan, Community Relations Manager at UU said: “This initiative has enabled students and residents of the Holyland to work together to enhance the local environment. The project has drawn on the artistic talents of all those involved – generating themes and ideas for the mural and participating in workshops facilitated by professional artists.
“Everyone agreed it was important to show the diversity of those living in the area, so we have represented the students, families, the elderly and ethnic minorities, who all live side by side in the Holyland.”

Pedestrian Injured In Belfast Hit-and-Run
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a hit-and-run incident in the Botanic Avenue area of Belfast in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1.30am after a male pedestrian was struck by a maroon Mazda. Despite being injured, the pedestrian left the area before police arrived.

Northern Ireland pupils are in a class of their own
Northern Ireland students have outperformed their peers in England and Wales in both A-level and the new AS level exams. Figures released by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) on Thursday August 16 show a record 48,000 grades have been issued to Northern Ireland students across all exam boards.

Residents from the Holylands in Belfast have met with the Employment and Learning Minister after 11 people were arrested on St Patrick's Day. Dr Stephen Farry told the Holyland Regeneration Association "we need to look afresh at what different steps need to be taken".

UU initiative targets community relations improvement
The University of Ulster today launched a Civic Leadership Training Programme developed as part of the on-going efforts to promote good relations between students and residents, particularly in the Holyland area of Belfast. Recent problems in the area have led to today’s launch which has saw 120 students and 20 residents sign up for the initiative.
