Sports ground safety funding announced
Around £9 million is to be made available to sports grounds across Northern Ireland to improve safety standards.
Sports Minister David Hanson announced the funding during a debate in Parliament on the draft Safety of Sports Grounds (Northern Ireland) Order 2005.
The aim of the legislation is to introduce a safety certification scheme for sports grounds with a capacity for more than 5,000 spectators and for spectator stands with a capacity of more than 500.
The legislation will introduce a safety certification scheme similar to that which already exists in Great Britain for larger sports grounds and non-temporary spectator stands.
Speaking in the House of Commons, the Minister said: "This legislation will give powers to local District Councils to issue safety certificates, enforce the conditions of the safety certificates and, if necessary, issue prohibition notices.
"Valid certificates will be required not only for sporting events, but also for other public events held in sports grounds. It will also make owners, occupiers or managers of sports grounds or event organisers responsible for the safety of all spectators when they are using or visiting the ground regardless of the event or activity."
The certificate will incorporate spectator viewing capacities, entry and exiting arrangements, safety management arrangements and contingency plans.

North-South Fire Safety Week launched
A joint north-south Fire Safety Week has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade and the Republic of Ireland’s National Safety Council. ‘Fire, Our Community at Risk’ aims to raise public awareness of fire safety issues, and in particular, the higher risk to the very young and elderly people living alone.

The construction trade is to enjoy a minor fillip with news that work on a £1m upgrade to Institute FC's ground in Drumahoe in Co Londonderry has begun. The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and party colleague Sports Minister Nelson McCausland cut the first sod of the major improvement scheme at Institute's Riverside facility.
