NI unemployment rate at all-time low

Northern Ireland's unemployment rate is at an all-time low, latest figures have revealed.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the period August - October 2005 was 4%, a fall of 1%, which was recorded in both the previous quarter and in the same period last year.

This compares to the UK average of 4.9%, and is the second lowest among the UK regions. It is also considerably lower than the EU average of 8.6% for September 2005.

Seasonally adjusted figures from the Quarterly Employment Survey also show the highest number of employee jobs on record for Northern Ireland. The survey estimated that there were 693,450 employee jobs filled in September 2005, representing a net increase of 270 over the quarter and an increase of 9,710 over the year. Over three-quarters of the annual increase in jobs was accounted for by a rise in full-time work.

Commenting on the figures, NIO Minister Angela Smith said: "These are very encouraging results for the Northern Ireland labour market. Unemployment is at its lowest ever level and our businesses have reported the highest number of jobs on record."

Seasonally adjusted figures also estimate the working age employment rate in NI at 69.6% for the period August - October 2005, up from 69.3% in the previous quarter and 67.7% a year ago.
