Ballycastle ferry link revival looks doubtful
Plans to revive the ferry service between Northern Ireland and Scotland look more unlikely than ever due to a lack of interest from investors.
The invitation from the Scottish Executive to set up a ferry service between Campbeltown in Kintyre and Ballycastle in County Antrim has reached its tendering period deadline and is reported to have failed to attract any bidders.
An unsubsidised summer-only service had previously been operated between these destinations for the three years leading up to 1999, but was stopped due to "unsustainable" losses.
A previous attempt to revive the service more recently in 2002 also failed to produce a response.
Four firms were invited to tender for the service this time, however, despite the offer of a subsidy of £1 million, it has been unsuccessful in attracting offers.
The Scottish Executive have declined to make a comment on the situation.

SOS For Sinking Ferry Service
As a scenic cross border transport link remains in jeopardy, a Coleraine Sinn Féin councillor has urged NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster to take action to save the ferry. Billy Leonard wants the DUP Minister to play her part along with other Stormont Executive colleagues to save the Magilligan ferry service to Greencastle.

A renewed effort to reinstate the Campbeltown to Ballycastle ferry service has been announced by Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner and Scottish Executive Transport Minister Nicol Stephen. Tenders will be invited for the service, that links Argyll and Moyle, through a joint Scottish Executive and Northern Ireland Administration project.

Roads Service Ready For Winter Weather
Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has confirmed that the Department's winter service team is prepared to tackle the current cold snap. Around 300 staff and 130 gritters are ready to salt main roads, while 12 snow blowers are available for deployment if necessary. To ensure a comprehensive winter service, the Department has allocated £3.

A lifeline has been thrown to a fast-sinking cross-border car ferry service. The crisis-hit Lough Foyle Ferry - which was due to cease services this week for good - is to continue until at least Christmas, on the understanding that new funding is found.
