Million pound investment transforms Enniskillen
A new town development project costing £1.4 million has been opened today in Enniskillen town centre.
The Queen Elizabeth Boulevard saw the widening of walkways, which were additionally upgraded with granite paving to create more of a promenade feel, with new seats installed and viewing areas developed over the Erne River.
The number of fishing stands has been increased and a new jetty built. Picnic tables, barbeque area seating and new plants have also been added, developing leisure and tourist opportunities for the area.
Development Minister David Hanson said: "The way a town centre looks and feels is vitally important for its success. I am always looking for new and imaginative proposals that will create an attractive town centre environment, encouraging people to invest, work and visit it."
He added that the investment into Enniskillen has now transformed what used to be an ordinary roadway into an extremely attractive pedestrian-friendly boulevard.
The Minister continued: "It enhances the unique character of Enniskillen, meeting the modern demands of retailers and customers, while creating an attractive environment for tourists and leisure users alike.
"This project clearly demonstrates how unique solutions for town centres can be delivered through partnership, creating a safe, high quality environment that will act as a catalyst for further local regeneration."
The Minister paid tribute to Waterways Ireland, DRD Roads Service and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure for their contributions to the scheme, and to Fermanagh District Council for both their financial input, and their efficient management of the project.
