100th Neighbourhood Watch Scheme launched in NI
Ballyrussell Neighbourhood Watch has become the 100th scheme to be opened in Northern Ireland since the project was officially launched in July 2004.
Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson, along with Sir Desmond Rea and Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie today attended the launch of the Ballyrussell scheme.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Hanson said that that the Neighbourhood watch scheme has helped thousands of households in the province to tackle crime, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour within their communities.
He said: “More than 12,000 households are directly involved in Neighbourhood Watch throughout Northern Ireland which is a testament to the success of the schemes in enabling local communities to positively influence community safety within their areas.
“The exchange of information to and from the PSNI keeps local communities informed about crime in their areas and what they can do to reduce it. This flow of information is vital for tackling both crime and the fear of crime.”
When asked about the recent attacks on the elderly, the Minister said that we have all been horrified by these attacks and have increased the fear amongst the elderly. He added that Neighbourhood Watch can provide reassurance and act as an effective deterrent to potential burglars.
Policing Board Chairman, Professor Sir Desmond Rea also spoke at the launch saying that the Policing Board and District Policing Partnerships (DPPs) recognise the important role of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and fully endorse their development and implementation.
He added: “DPP's, in particular, have supported the establishment of these schemes in towns and villages across Northern Ireland. By working closely with those involved in Neighbourhood Watch, DPP's have been able to identify local residents’ policing concerns and work in partnership with the police to ensure that these concerns are addressed."
ACC Gillespie also welcomed the scheme saying that it is similar to policing in the community and has proved to be very successful.
She continued by saying that Neighbourhood Watch encourages the community spirit and promotes a constructive relationship with the police, therefore making the area safer to live in.
