Minister Welcomes Trade Statistics Released By The CSO
Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr Michael Ahern, has welcomed the trade statistics released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The preliminary figures for December 2005 show that exports increased by 10% compared to December 2004 and this followed an 11% increase for November 2005, compared to November 2004. There was the expected seasonal rise of imports for December, which increased by 17%, with an additional influencing factor being the recent large increases in oil and other fuels. In relation to the definitive figures for the period January to November 2005, exports increased by 4% and imports by 9%, the latter figure once again being significantly impacted by energy prices.
Minister Ahern expressed his satisfaction with the latest trade figures and the overall trend during 2005. He particularly welcomed the increase in exports of foods, beverages, chemicals, computers and scientific equipment. This was achieved despite a worldwide environment where trading conditions remain difficult especially with low growth rates in the major European economies.
Ireland's annual overall surplus on merchandise trade, based on the preliminary figures for the full year, is an extremely healthy €2.36bn.
This is derived from exports of €7.82bn and imports of €5.46bn.
