Man falls victim to kidnapping hoax in County Tyrone
Police in Strabane are appealing for information following a hoax-kidnapping situation in the town yesterday afternoon.
At around 2pm, a County Tyrone man received and anonymous phone call telling him that a member of his family had been kidnapped.
He was then told that the relative would only be released if he paid a ransom, which was to be dropped at a pick-up point later that day.
The man, who was working at the Bureau de Change on the Lifford Road in Stabane, was told to cross the border and deliver an undisclosed sum of money to a car, which had been left in a car park in Lifford, County Donegal.
After the victim dropped the money at the location, he checked that his family were safe before contacting police.
Gardai later recovered the money.
Detectives in Strabane and the Irish Police are launching an investigation into the incident, and have asked for anyone with any information to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
