Derry postal workers threaten industrial action
Following the two-week unofficial postal strike in Belfast, there are fears that postal workers in Londonderry may take a similar action if a row with Royal Mail is not resolved.
The row relates to proposals which are likely to change the way staff carry out their jobs and receive payment.
A representative for the Communication Workers Union has today said that this new regime could result in some workers losing up to £7,000 per year.
He continued that the CWU intended to take the proper course of action as far as possible, and would fight it as far as they can. He added that the industrial action would stop short of the postal workers going on strike.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail today confirmed that staff would experience a gradual loss in earnings, however compensation will be made available to those affected.
