Bus and rail fares set to increase
Bus and rail fares are to increase by 9% by the end of March, Translink has announced today.
From March 27, the cost of using the Metro service will increase by 7%, with Ulsterbus and NIR fares both rising by 9%.
Translink have blamed the hike on the impact of rising energy prices, which has resulted in the additional cost of fuel.
Speaking earlier, Ciaran Rogan, a spokesman for Translink said: "We have done what we can to minimise rises in fares, but everyone is aware of the rising cost of fuel."
He added: "This was acknowledged by the Consumer Council. Nevertheless, with our net fuel costs increasing by over 70% in two years it is now inevitable that this now impacts on Northern Ireland's bus and rail services."
Inner Zone cash fares are expected to rise from £1.20 to £1.30, and Extended Zone cash fare increased from £1.50 to £1.60.
Ulster Unionist leader, Sir Reg Empey commented on the increase in travel costs and added that if this is to happen then the public deserve a better service.
He said: “When Ulsterbus, Northern Ireland Railways and the Metro are failing to reach their punctuality targets, it a bitter pill to swallow when passengers are being asked to pay more.
"Lateness and higher fares won’t encourage people to ditch their cars for the bus”.
Sir Reg continued by saying that although he understands that rising fuel costs are to blame, Translink will have to strike some sort of balance.
He concluded that if they feel it is necessary to keep raising fares, they should provide a service that arrives on time.

Translink Fares To Increase
Fares are to increase on Metro, train and bus service from February, Translink has said. From Monday 16 February next year, most Metro fares are to rise by 10p, while Ulsterbus and NI Railways fares will increase by 4% and 4.5% on average, respectively.

Consumer Council Slams Translink Fares Increase
Transport fares in Northern Ireland are to increase by up to 2% on Metro and local Ulsterbus and 3% on Northern Ireland Railways local fares. However, there won't be increases in the prices of Metro Smartlink and Ulsterbus multi-journey. Metro day ticket are also held at the current price, but most cash fare tickets are to increase by 10p.
