Royal Victoria Hospital to be main regional trauma centre
The Royal Victoria Hospital is to receive a major boost from the Department of Health, by becoming the regional centre for serious trauma cases in Northern Ireland.
It is understood that ambulances are to be encouraged to bypass other smaller Accident and Emergency units and to take patients directly to the Royal.
At present, there is an ongoing review into the treatment of major trauma cases in the province and it has been reported that on average, one person is treated in this category on a daily basis.
A report by the Department of Health claims that research has shown that people taken directly to a regional specialist centre, would receive more beneficial treatment.
However it has been said that if a patient is unlikely to survive the journey to Belfast, they would be taken to one of Northern Ireland's other main hospitals, such as, Altnagelvin, Craigavon, Antrim or the Ulster, where they would be resuscitated and stabilised before eventually being transferred to Belfast. However, the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, the Erne in Enniskillen and the Daisy Hill in Newry did not feature on the Departments list of suitable hospitals.

Virus closes hospital beds across province
Hospitals in Northern Ireland are struggling to deal with the effects of a common virus which has left people waiting on trollies for beds and caused a severe backlog in surgery. The virus, which affects patients and staff, comes as hospitals throughout the province struggle to cope with an increased number of patients because of winter illnesses.

Trauma To Be Less Traumatic
