BELB vote to reject services cutback
The Belfast Education and Library Board has again voted to reject a service cutback in services despite a £6.5 million budget shortfall.
BELB Chairman Jim Rodgers said the Board were not going to carry out the government's "dirty work" and called for adequate funding for education services in the Belfast area.
Education Minister Angela Smith, previously asked the board to make cuts at an earlier meeting, however they refused to do this until they had a chance to talk directly with her.
Areas likely to be affected by the cutbacks include Belfast's School of Music, which could face job losses and the budget for special needs, which could result in possible redundancies and unit closures.
Other areas expected to be hit are school crossing patrols along with an increase in the cost of school dinners.
Speaking before today's meeting, BELB Chairman Jim Rodgers said that it was "not going to be easy" to address the budget shortfall, and added that the final decision was up to the BELB members, on the advice of their officers.
Mr Rodgers concluded by saying that regardless of what the Department of Education says, there is not enough money going into Northern Ireland's education system, never mind Belfast.

Education Minister To Meet With BELB
Education Minister Caitriona Ruane is to meet with members of the Belfast Education and Library Board (BELB) following the suspension of meetings last week in protest at fund shortages. The Board has predicted a funding deficit of £7.5m by the end of the financial year despite promises by the department for extra money.

News that 15 expressions of interest have been lodged with the Department under the Shared Education Campuses Programme has been welcomed by Education Minister John O'Dowd. The Minister launched the Shared Education Campuses Programme in January, with a deadline of 31 March for receipt for expressions of interest.
