NI win bowling silver medal in Melbourne
Northern Ireland have picked up their first medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
In the men's triples lawn bowls match the Northern Ireland trio of Neil Booth, Jeremy Henry and Mark McPeak had to settle for the Silver as Australia took two sets 8-6 and 10-4 to win the match for the Gold medal.
The Northern Ireland three faced down England on Sunday in a tense tie-break game that clinched at least Silver for the local trio.
Booth, Henry and McPeak got off to a good start in the first set, leading 4-1, but the Australian trio of Mervyn King, Andy Thompson and Robert Newman fought back to take the set 8-6. In the second set the Aussies showed no signs of wavering and took the set 10-4 securing the Gold medal.
NI Women's Singles star Margaret Johnston has won her first match, but then experienced a defeat at the hands of Fijian Litia Tikoisuva. She plays again on Wednesday after a rest day.
In the Women's Pairs NI duo Barbara Cameron and Donna McNally finished third in the quarter-final qualifying round.
The men faired less well with the duo of Jonathan Ross and Noel Graham out of contention, and in the singles Mark McPeak being beaten 7-6, 11-5 to New Guinean Peter Juni.
