DoE introduce further protection for Irish hare
The Department of the Environment (DoE) is set to introduce a further temporary ban on the killing, taking and trade in Irish hares.
The ban will run for a period starting on April 17 2006 until March 31 2007, as part of a special protection order under the terms of the Game Preservation Act (NI) 1928.
The Act enables the Minister to decide, at his discretion, if it is necessary or expedient to provide special protection for any kind of game. This will allow him to prohibit the killing or taking, or the sale or purchase, of any game prescribed by the order during the stated period.
A spokesman for the DOE today said: "The results of the 2005 Irish Hare Survey provided some encouraging indicators about the Irish hare population, but showed a reduction in overall numbers from 2004. The department considers it appropriate to provide further protection until there is more certainty about the stabilisation and sustainability of the population. The department will be undertaking a further survey during 2006 in support of the work in recent years in order to determine the trends in the population."
He added that in 2005, the department sought objections to the proposal to introduce further protection for the Irish hare and the above decision was made following consideration of the objections received.
