Burglar stabs man with with screwdriver

Police in West Belfast are appealing for information following an aggravated burglary in the early hours of this morning.

A police spokesperson today said that a robber broke into a property in Fruithill Park at around 4.30am, where he wakened a 21-year-old male occupant.

When the man confronted the intruder, a struggle ensued and the thief made his escape leaving the man with stab wounds to his arm and neck.

Police have revealed that the robber may have been armed with a screwdriver.

The assailant has been described as being in his late teens and with a dark, shaven head. He is also thought to be wearing dark, mustard coloured coat with a hood.

Detectives believe that the burglary may be connected with a number of other incidents in the Fruithill Park area of the city, when several cars were broken into, set alight or stolen.

Police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed anything in connection to any of the incidents, to contact them at Grosvenor Road on 0845 600 8000, or on anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.

Police Cancel Appeal For Missing Omagh Man
Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.
