Operation 'Road Safe' figures released
Police have today released figures following the Bank Holiday weekend operation that was carried out across roads in the urban Belfast Region.
Operation ‘Road Safe,’ which involved officers from the Urban Roads Policing Unit, supported by district officers, targeting areas identified as accident black spots as a part of the PSNI's ongoing commitment to reducing road deaths in Northern Ireland.
Over the bank holiday weekend, officers issued over 200 Fixed Penalty notices, 108 of which were issued for speeding offences, while a further 13 are still to be reported.
There were also 29 arrests for drink driving offences and 58 drivers are to be reported for careless or dangerous driving offences.
Speaking earlier, Deputy Chief Constable for Belfast, Chief Superintendent Wesley Wilson said: “These figures show our commitment to tackling the issue of Road Safety and enforcement.
We will continue to target those who behave irresponsibly on the roads by speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not paying attention or not wearing their seatbelt.”
Chief Superintendent Wilson continued: “It continues to amaze and sadden police officers that some motorists persist in disregarding the basic rules of road safety. All drivers have a responsibility not only for their own safety, but the safety of other road users. It is important that this message gets through.”
He concluded by saying: "If every road user in the province did not drink and drive, wore their seatbelt, used more care and attention and did not speed, we would go some significant way to reduce the carnage on our roads."
Since January this year 46 people have lost their lives on Northern Ireland’s roads.
