Altnagelvin Hospital to receive major funding

Altnagelvin Hospital is to receive major government funding which will go towards the re-development of the site.

Around £32.9 million is to go towards the regeneration of Altnagelvin Hospital’s Tower Block in order to transforming health services in the west of the province.

The re-development includes new accommodation for key services, such as maternity and neo-natal services, some cancer services, adult acute services and rehabilitation services.

The contract, which has been awarded to a construction team lead by Farrans Construction Ltd, is for Phase 3 of an extensive re-development programme currently under way at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The work is due to commence within the next six weeks and is scheduled to be completed by late 2008.

Commenting on today's announcement, Health Minister Shaun Woodward said: “Health and social services are about people, and the people who use our services and work in them deserve to do so in a modern, purpose built environment.

"This re-development will ensure the hospital can continue to provide high quality medical care with up-to-the-minute technologically - advanced facilities in modern surroundings. It represents the continuing commitment to transform the health service in the Western Board area.”

The re-development is an extension of the major Capital Investment Programme in the acute sector, which is being delivered by the Department in the context of the planned £2.2 billion programme of investment in health and social services in the province over the next ten years.
