Belfast Deputy Lord Mayor to address peace conference

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat Convery, is among the guest speakers at a major international peace conference being held in Italy this week.

Councillor Convery was invited to address the three-day conference by Rondine Citadella della Pace.

The theme is ‘Citizenship’ and among the issues being discussed are civil society, the environment, the family, human rights, economic development, young people and education.

Councillor Convery said that he was extremely honoured to have been asked to address the conference and that he was looking forward to a stimulating discussion with the other delegates.

The highlight of the conference will be a panel discussion, when the Deputy Lord Mayor will join delegates from Berlin, Cyprus and Sarajevo to address the issue of ‘Walls Come Down, Citizenship Is Rebuilt’.

Among the questions which the panel will seek to address will be the likes of ‘Does a society of forgiveness grow out of the ability to forgive those who have murdered one’s father?’, ‘When does the abolition of division end and the construction of a new sense of citizenship start?’ and ‘What role can local authorities, institutions, associations and churches play in this process?’.
