Two youths released in arson inquiry

Two youths, arrested in connection with an arson attack on a school in County Down, have been released pending reports to the Public Prosecution Service.

The fire started on Friday evening, at De La Salle High School in Downpatrick, where two classrooms and a storeroom were destroyed during the blaze.

Ten other classrooms were smoke-damaged by three fires, which are believed to have been started in separate classrooms.

It is understood that some GSCE coursework, which was due to be marked next week, was also destroyed.

Peter Deeney, the school's vice-principal: "Their coursework, especially the GCSE coursework, has been destroyed by fire.

"There's been a lot of damage done to the geography room where a lot of the pupils worked.

"They have been working for the last three or four weeks solidly after school. As you can see, its devastated."The fire service believe that the fires were started using books and artwork.

The blaze was spotted at around 8pm on Friday, by a member of the public who raised the alarm.

One other juvenile was arrested on Saturday in connection with the fire, but was later released, pending police reports.
