Landmark development set for Derry City Centre
A derelict site in the Foyle Street area of Londonderry, is to be transformed into a landmark development in a bid to set new standards for the city centre.
Social Development Minister, David Hanson, announced that the Department of Social Development (DSD), through the North West Development Office, has issued a development brief for the former City Hotel site.
Speaking earlier today, David Hanson said: “This is an important development site within the Commercial Core of the city and one which is certain to be attractive to investors. My aspiration for the site, which has been derelict for over 10 years, is that it will now become an iconic, flagship development that sets new design standards for the City.
“The development will add to the ambitious public sector projects already under way in the city centre in what is an exciting time for Londonderry."
The Minister continued: “These projects include DSD’s £8 million public realm enhancement scheme for the Guildhall Square/Waterloo Place area, the £10 million Walled City Signature Tourism Destination project led by Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the planned redevelopment of Ebrington by Ilex which includes new river crossings.”
Emphasising the need for effective partnerships, Mr Hanson said: “While it is important to recognise the achievements that have been made the process of urban renewal must be widened and strengthened. Combining economic success with social justice in a sustainable urban environment remains, therefore, a major priority for Government.
“However this is not just a task for Government alone. Local leadership and entrepreneurial action will be crucial if Derry is to improve its economic performance and fulfil its proper role as the driver of the regional economy."
Mr Hanson continued by saying that the development of this site is critical in taking the city centre to the next level of regeneration, and that the government is anxious to work with the private sector to deliver an iconic development that will serve as an exemplar of high quality urban design, make a positive statement in relation to Derry’s regional status and add social, economic and environmental value to the fabric of the city.
