Leaflet explains NI rate changes
A leaflet explaining the major changes to the domestic rates system has been published and is to be distributed to households throughout the province, Finance Minister David Hanson has revealed.
These changes include the first revaluation of all homes here for 30 years, and a move to using capital values, rather than current rental values, to calculate rates bills from April 2007.
From this date the capital valuation will also be used to calculate water charges.
The leaflet, which is published by the Valuation and Lands Agency is currently being delivered to all homes in Northern Ireland.
Emphasising his commitment to making sure householders are given clear information about these important issues, Mr Hanson said that this is just the start of a carefully planned programme of communication with the public about these changes.
The Minister said: “From April 2007 rates bills will be calculated using capital valuations. This new leaflet explains why the system is changing and how capital valuations are arrived at. It also tells householders that during July and August they will receive the actual valuation for their home, along with details on how to have this reviewed if they disagree with the figure."
Mr Hanson concluded by saying that householders need do nothing now, and added that the government are simply ensuring that people are aware that a new system is being introduced, which will be fairer and easier to understand.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.
