Man 'critical' after hammer attack
A 54-year-old man is in a critical condition after he was attacked with a hammer during a burglary at his home in South Belfast.
He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
The victim was in bed with his wife at their Strangford Avenue home around 6.30am on Sunday morning when a gang of up to four men assaulted him.
The attackers left the premises after stealing house and car keys and used the couple’s Vauxhall Frontera to ram through driveway gates.
They made their way to a second house in the street where they attacked an elderly man and his son with a hammer before attempting to steal the family car. The son sustained a head injury and his father suffered a blow to his wrist.
The gang made their way into nearby Harberton Park where they hi-jacked a white VW Polo with the registration number VIW 9230 and drove to Balmoral Avenue where police stopped the car.
Two of the men made off towards Musgrave Park while a third man ran towards the Boucher Road. A fourth man was arrested in connection with the burglary and assault and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
Detectives at Musgrave Street have appealed for anyone who was in the Strangford Avenue and Harberton Park area at the time to come forward.
Police believe the gang may have discarded the weapon used in the assault and they have urged anyone who locates a hammer or similar implement between Strangford Avenue and Balmoral Avenue or who has any information to immediately contact police on 028 9065 0222 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
