'Cowardly' LVF killer sentenced to 12 years
The man who was found guilty of the manslaughter of a Portadown woman in 1999 has been sentenced to 12 years in prison
In sentencing Philip Joseph Blaney, 37, of Shimna Walk in Lurgan, Mr Justice Coghlin described him as "cowardly" and "despicable".
Blaney was convicted in January for his role in the killing of Elizabeth O'Neill on June 5 1999. He was found to have been a member of the four-man loyalist paramilitary LVF gang which carried out the bomb attack.
Mrs O'Neill, 59, died after she attempted to remove a blast bomb which had been thrown through the living room window of her Corcrain Drive home. Her husband was uninjured in the attack.
Justice Coghlin said that the attack had been "purely sectarian" and carried out in a bid to drive Catholics from the area.
Blaney was also sentenced to serve concurrent sentences for three other terrorist-related offences.

Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a deliberate arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 17 November, 2023. Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 12:40am.

Detectives in Belfast are investigating a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in the Andersonstown Road area. The incident occurred around 9.55pm on Wednesday, November 13th. Detective Sergeant Faulkner confirmed that officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who successfully extinguished the blaze.

Dublin pharmacist Karen Walsh has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years for murdering her neighbour Marie Rankin on Christmas Day in 2008. Walsh, 45, showed no emotion as Mr Justice Hart sentenced her at Belfast Crown Court for what he described as a sustained and brutal attack on an elderly, defenceless and frail woman.
