Newtownabbey security alert ends
A security alert in County Antrim has ended.
Shortly after 7am this morning, Army Technical Officers and the Fire and Rescue Service were called to Merville House in Newtownabbey, following reports that a suspicious object had been found.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the device, which caused damage to the front door of the property.
Following forensic examination, the device has been described as “crude, but not viable.”
Newtownabbey district commander, Inspector Will Kerr said that today's alert was an attempt to disrupt a District Policing Partnership (DPP) meeting, due to be held at Merville House later this evening.
He said: “Anyone engaging in this type of activity has absolutely nothing to offer the local community.
“The vast majority of local people want an effective and professional policing service and DPP meetings play a crucial role in giving the local community the opportunity to hold police to account and raise key concerns that they have.”
He continued: “Clearly this mornings alert was aimed to cause major disruption and to intimidate local people from attending tonight's meeting.
“The meeting will go ahead and I encourage local people to come along as usual.
I would appeal to anyone with any influence in the community to to continue to work with police and in ensuring that we bring an end to these types of incidents for good.”
