Motorists warned of further Westlink delays

Motorists have been warned to expect further delays on the Westlink due to an increase of traffic on the roads as the new school year resumes.

The Roads Service has also revealed that as well as the increase in school-run traffic, the roadworks to improve the Westlink is also being stepped up.

A spokesperson for the Roads Service has today urged drivers to use alternative routes where possible.

He said: "Roads Service would reiterate to travellers on the Westlink to consider their options, consider varying your journey times to avoid the peak times, consider using the park-and-ride facilities at Black's Road and Sprucefield and consider using the signed alternative routes."

The roadworks are expect to last until the spring of 2009, and will see the creation of three continuous lanes of traffic on the M1 and Westlink between Blacks Road and Divis Street junctions, which should bring an end to major traffic congestion in what is described as one of Northern Ireland's busiest roads.

Until the Westlink's regeneration is complete, two lanes will be maintained for traffic in both directions between 6am and 10pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 11am on Sundays.
