£1m allocated to upgrade Craigavon maternity suite

Health Minister, Paul Goggins, has welcomed the approval of a £1 million project to upgrade the Maternity Delivery Suite at Craigavon Area Hospital.

Funding has been approved for a new maternity theatre. The upgrade of the existing back-up theatre has also been approved which will ensure maintenance of the safest possible delivery facilities, for the increasing number of births at Craigavon Area Hospital.

Mr Goggins commented: “This is good news for expectant mothers and babies in the Craigavon area. Modernising the maternity theatres will significantly help to maintain their safety. This will be one of the early phases of work in developing Craigavon Area Hospital into a first class twenty first century hospital.

"I am determined to put patients first in our health service. This development is an early benefit of the planned £2.9 billion programme of investment in health and social services which we are delivering across Northern Ireland over the next 10 years.”

The Department’s hospital modernisation policy, set out in Developing Better Services (2002), proposed that Craigavon Area Hospital would continue to be developed as an Acute Hospital.

An allocation for redevelopment of Craigavon Area Hospital was included in the £2.9billion investment programme announced for health and social services over the next ten years in the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland in December 2004.
