NI dentists could leave NHS

The British Dental Association has warned that many of Northern Ireland dentists could walk away from the NHS.

It is understood that many dentists find it difficult to make their businesses work under the NHS and as figures released by the NHS Information Centre stated earlier this week, 54% of dentists derived their gross income from private work.

If this happens, disadvantaged areas could greatly suffer.

A spokesperson for the BDA said dentists were independent businesses and many were finding it difficult to cover costs with the gross income from the NHS.

Around 2,000 dentists walked away from the NHS in England in April 2005, after refusing to sign the new contract, leaving up to one million patients without dentists.
