Queen opens new court complex during Belfast visit
During a visit to Northern Ireland today the Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip, performed an opening ceremony at Laganside court complex.
Amid tight security, including specially trained police marksmen on rooftops, a small crowd applauded as the party arrived at the £30 million glass-fronted building in the city centre this morning.
Her Majesty was welcomed by the Northern Ireland Lord Chief Justice Sir Robert Carswell, the Lord Lieutenant of Belfast Lady Carswell, Sheriff of Belfast Margaret Clark, Belfast City Council Chief Executive Peter McNaney and MP for South Belfast the Rev Martin Smyth.
The Queen and Prince Philip were then introduced to Lord Chancellor Derry Irvine, the Recorder of Belfast Judge Hart, and the Director of the Northern Ireland Court Service David Lavery. The Queen then met Court Service staff, members of the judiciary and other members of the legal profession.
The Queen is expected to attend a series of engagements in Belfast throughout the day.
Earlier this week Lord Irvine of Lairg opened the Court House in Dungannon.

Man Seriously Attacked In South Belfast
Police are appealing for information after a man was seriously attacked in south Belfast. The assault occurred at a property in the Wauchope Court area on New Year's Eve. The man, aged in his 20s, is being treated in hospital. Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Police Appeal After 'Shot Fired' In North Belfast
Police have launched an investigation after reports of a shot being fired in north Belfast. No-one is believed to have been injured in the incident in the Farringdon Court area on Thursday. Police are keen to establish what happened and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

Suspended Prison Term For Fraudster
Nine people were convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates' court this week for claiming benefits they were not entitled to - with one handed a jail term. Colin McGookin (52) of Sheringhurst Park, Belfast claimed Income Support, Incapacity Benefit and Disability Living Allowance totalling £25,168 while failing to declare employment.

A 40-year-old man has appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court today, charged in connection with a number of sexual offences. The man faces on charge of rape, two charges of sexual assault and one charge of sexual activity with a child.

Two due in court charged with riotous behaviour
A 21-year-old-man is due to appear in Belfast Magistrates Court today, charged with riotous assembly. The man, who is from the Highfield area of the city, is charged in connection with riotous behaviour in North Belfast, following the contentious Whiterock parade on September 10, 2005.
