Hain warns that deadline must be met
Secretary of State Peter Hain has today warned that if the November 24 deadline for the restoration of devolution is not met, then he will press ahead with implementing Labour policy within Northern Ireland.
Speaking during the Labour party conference in Manchester, Mr Hain said that if an agreement is not reached, then the Northern Ireland political parties faced an “historic choice between the future and the past.”
He also added that consequences for politicians would be serious, with party members no longer being paid, party funding being stopped immediately, staff being made redundant – and an overall closure of Stormont.
Mr Hain added: "Even more serious, if there is no deal by the 24th, the Assembly will be dissolved the following week - and that is the real moment of truth for Northern Ireland's politicians because they all know that the opportunity to try again may not come around for years."
Speaking at the Labour conference, the DUP said that they would "not respond to threats or bullying" and added that they were not fully convinced that the IRA had completely given up paramilitary and criminal activity.
DUP leader Ian Paisley added that Sinn Fein would have to change their policy on policing before they can become a “credible partner in government.”
