Searches resume at River Lagan

Searches of the River Lagan are set to resume today, following reports of a man being seen in the water over the weekend.

Police were alerted to the incident at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon, after receiving a report from a member of the public claiming that they had seen a man, dressed in dark coloured clothing and with a backpack, in the river close to the Queen's Bridge area of south Belfast.

Police divers and helicopters attended the scene, however no one was found.

Approximately one hour later, a man matching the description, was reported to have been sighted emerging from the Belfast Lough at Whitehead and making his way by foot in the direction of Newtownabbey.
