£1 million wasted during trawler decommissioning
Over £1 million of taxpayers money was wasted during the decommissioning of Northern Ireland trawlers, a report issued by the Northern Ireland Audit Office has today revealed.
The aim of the decommissioning programme was to reduce the number of trawlers in the water, therefore easing pressure on fish stocks.
In the report, the Audit Office criticised how the Department of Agriculture had handled the way in which it decided which boats would receive grants.
The watchdog found that the owners of 22 trawlers each had their grants increased by £40,000, costing taxpayers an extra £900,000, and with "no justification."
The department said it would take full account of the recommendations.

Last Decommissioning Report Published
The final report of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) - prepared at the request of the British and Irish governments - has been published today. This final report reflects on the IICD's 12 years in operation from September 1997 to the ending of the decommissioning amnesty in February 2010.
