Officers suspended over drink driving offences
Two off-duty policemen were among the 609 motorists arrested over the Christmas period for suspected drink-driving offences.
Earlier today, a police spokeswoman confirmed: "Two officers were detected for drink driving but neither of them were on duty at the time."
It is understood that both officers have since been suspended.
The news emerged after the PSNI released a report stating that the number of drink drivers detected over the Christmas period had increased since 2005.
The figures, revealed that 609 people were caught over the legal limit – an increase of 57 since the same period last year.
A number of drivers proved unfit to drive, while others refused to provide a sample to police.
Commenting on the latest figures, Superintendent Bill Brown, head of the PSNI's Road Policing Development Branch, said that the report proved that people who drink and drive would be caught.
He said: "We said at the outset of the campaign that there would be no hiding place for those who drink and drive. The figures from across Northern Ireland show that we lived up to that determination."
Superintendent Brown added: "Although the current publicity campaign has ended, I can assure people that there will be no let up in our determination to catch drink drivers and bring them before the courts.”
