NI Road Safety Monitor 2006 published
The Northern Ireland Road Safety Monitor 2006 has been published.
The results outline the behaviour, attitudes and awareness of the general public to road safety issues throughout the province.
This most recent research commissioned by the Department of the Environment (DOE) found that just over one in five motorists stated that they never exceed speed limits, although males are more likely to do so than females.
More than two-thirds of people surveyed said that they would be unlikely to travel in a car in which the driver has had a single drink and half of those responding felt that motorists should not be allowed to drive if they had consumed any alcohol at all. Just over half thought that the penalties for drinking and driving are not very severe.
Pedestrians responded that TV campaigns had influenced their behaviour and three-quarters of them said they always or almost always use a pedestrian crossing.
Nearly half of drivers questioned, admitted they have felt drowsy when driving and a third of them mentioned that this had happened on motorways.

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.
