Judgement reserved as Omagh trial ends

The Omagh bomb trial has today ended with the judge stating that he has a great deal to think about and a great deal of material to look at again.

After the trial Mr Justice Weir said that he would reserve judgement and would deliver his verdict as soon as possible.

It is understood that this will be within the next six to eight weeks.

Sean Hoey, 37, from Jonesborough, County Armagh, denies a total of 56 charges, including 29 counts of murder during the Omagh bombing in 1998.

Throughout the 56 days of the trial, over 500 witnesses were called, and around the same amount of exhibits were examined.

The verdict of the case will rely heavily on DNA and fibre evidence, however defence counsel Orlando Pownall has said that this was unreliable, and that the evidence had been "beefed up" by witnesses and important exhibits had been “interfered with".
