Man linked to McGartland shooting is arrested
A man who is suspected of being a member of the IRA assassination team that attempted to murder police informer Martin McGartland has been arrested in the Czech Republic.
Michael Dickson, 38, a former British soldier is currently in custody for alleged cigarette smuggling.
Scottish-born Dickson, who is a former Royal Engineer, faces charges in Germany in connection with a grenade attack on the British Army barracks in Osnabruck in 1996. Northumbria police would also like to question Mr Dickson in relation to the attempted murder of Martin McGartland on Tyneside in 1999.
Mr McGartland is a former RUC Special Branch agent who infiltrated the IRA at the age of 17. His book, '50 Dead Men Walking', detailed his experiences went on to become a bestseller.
Mr McGartland has had to live under an assumed identity in England since his escape from an IRA interrogation. However, republican gunmen caught with him three years ago when McGartland was badly wounded after being shot a number of times at his home in June 1999.
