Work begins on new Ikea store

Work has today begun on the first Ikea store to be built in Ireland.

The new Swedish furniture store will be located at the Holywood Exchange, just outside of east Belfast, and will bring approximately 500 new jobs to the area.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Pat McCarthy, cut the first sod on the site earlier today.

Commenting on the opening of the new business, the Lord Mayor said it was “a step in the right direction for the social and economic development of the area.”

He continued: "People who I have spoken to since the planning permission was announced by the secretary of state before Christmas are excited at the prospect of the new store being ready by the end of this year."

Once built, the Ikea store will include a 400 seat restaurant, a food hall, a crèche and a car park.

The store is due to open in November.
