Kerr to be named as Republic’s soccer manager
The Football Association of Ireland are expected to appoint Brian Kerr as the next manager of the Republic of Ireland football team.
Mr Kerr, who has had unparalleled success as manager of the Republic's youth sides, is believed to have got the nod over Bryan Robson and Phillipe Troussier for the post.
He will replace Mick McCarthy who resigned in November last year following a storm of controversy surrounding Roy Keane's decision to return home during the build up for the 2002 World Cup.
When his appointment is officially announced, public attention is likely to concentrate on the Keane issue.
The Manchester United star said he would not return to play for the Irish while McCarthy was in charge. So it will fall to the new manager to try and persuade the midfielder to return to international duty in a bid to qualify for next year's European Championships in Portugal.
If and when Kerr is appointed, former Irish and Spurs fullback Chris Hughton is the likely choice as his assistant.
Hughton is the present first-team coach at White Hart Lane and it is thought he would be able to combine both jobs.
