NI poultry farmers warned of bird flu outbreak
Poultry farmers throughout Northern Ireland have been warned to be vigilant following an outbreak of bird flu in England at the weekend.
Approximately 160,000 birds have been culled at a farm in Suffolk in the east of England after an outbreak of the deadly H5NI strain of bird flu was detected.
The Department of Agriculture has said that it has “robust” measures in place to deal with any outbreak in the province.
The Ulster Farmers Union has urged poultry farmers to ensure that good bio-security measures are in place and to be “extremely vigilant” and deal with any incidents as quickly as possible.
The H5N1 strain can be fatal if passed on to humans, however experts claim that the Suffolk incident was being contained and poses little danger to people.
Approximately three million chickens are produced in Northern Ireland every year and an outbreak in the province would be a major blow to the agriculture industry.

Bird Flu Protection Measures To Be Extended In NI
The Department of Agriculture has confirmed that bird flu protection measures are to be extended in Northern Ireland. The Avian Influenza Protection Zone is being extended until 31 May 2017. NI's Chief Veterinary Officer Robert J Huey is reminding all bird keepers to remain vigilant.
