Families flee homes as loyalist feud escalates
Seven families were forced to flee their homes in north Belfast yesterday as the loyalist feud continued.
The families said they were forced to leave their Alliance Avenue homes after members of the UDA gathered in the area and subjected them to several hours of intimidation.
Independent Unionist Councillor Frank McCoubrey claimed that shots were fired at houses in the area on Sunday night. Another resident said the door of a house was kicked in as more supporters of the paramilitary group gathered outside local houses.
Police said extra officers and soldiers were drafted into the area on Sunday and a security presence was maintained throughout Monday.
However, one local resident claimed that police patrols did nothing as they were subjected to four hours of abuse and intimidation.
Elsewhere in north Belfast, police have arrested five people after a stolen car crashed into another vehicle which had stopped at security checkpoint at Twaddell Avenue.
The incident happened at a police and army checkpoint at about 11.45 pm on Monday night.
One person in the stolen car and one person in the other vehicle were taken to hospital, however neither of the two were seriously injured.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

L'Derry Device 'Capable Of Killing'
A device found in a village in L'Derry during a security alert has been described by police as "capable of killing". About 30 homes were evacuated in Ballyarnett on Monday night and have since been allowed to return. Police said they could not yet provide any information on the size or type of device found.

Device Planted Close To Station
A 'viable' explosive device discovered close to a police station in Strabane had the potential to cause "serious death or injury", the police have said. Local residents were evacuated from the area while Army bomb teams dealt with the device. It has now been removed for forensic examination, and those living nearby have returned to their homes.

Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a deliberate arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 17 November, 2023. Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 12:40am.
