Big turnout for Jeanie Johnston famine ship
A replica famine ship which sailed into Belfast on Friday as part of a four day visit to the city has attracted three times as many visitors in Belfast as it did when it was in Dublin.
The Jeanie Johnston, which is floating museum to the Great Famine which swept Ireland in the middle of the 19th century, is an exact replica of the original Quebec-built ship which sailed between 1847-58.
A triple-masted barque, the ship is constructed of oak and pine, and carried a full complement of 200 passengers and a crew of 17. The replica vessel was built in Co Kerry as one of the Irish Republic's Millennium projects.
A crew of 40, including four Belfast teenagers, sailed the ship from Dublin to its berth at Queen's Quay on Friday.
The vessel is a floating museum exhibit for the Irish Famine in 1840's and has proved to be a substantial attraction to visitors at the ports she has so far visited.
The Jeanie Johnston's visit is part of a tour of Irish ports before the Jeanie Johnston heads off to the US next month to follow in the wake of its namesake.
