BT to invest £260m in NI network
BT is to create a new state-of-the art communications network costing £260 million in Northern Ireland, it has today been announced.
The new system is to be known as the 21st Century Network and it will power all of BT's services throughout the province.
The new centre is part of a £10 billion investment by BT throughout the UK and Europe.
The upgrade will involve creating three communications hubs to replace the 160 local telephone exchanges currently in operation – two of which will be based in Belfast and the third in Portadown.
The upgrade is expected to be the first to be completed in the UK and BT hope to have it in place by 2010.
