Verdict expected in Gran Canaria death case

A verdict is expected today in the case against a Country Antrim man accused of killing a Nigerian woman on the holiday island of Gran Canaria.

Vincent Traynor, 20, from Loughguile, has denied killing 23-year-old Stella Omeregie who was working as a prostitute, following an argument over money.

Her body was found on Cochino beach in Gran Canaria. Forensic experts told the court Omeregie had been beaten about the head before being strangled, which resulted in her death.

It is believed the woman was murdered on the day Mr Traynor and his friends arrived on the island.

Traynor told the court he had spent the day drinking with his friends before he was approached by the victim.

The judge in Las Palmos told the jury of 10 men and one woman to leave aside any preconceived notions based on television or newspaper reports, and concentrate on the facts presented in court.

The accused has admitted he was with the victim, and had struck her after and an argument followed over the fee she was owed.

However, he has insisted the woman was alive when he last saw her.
